Apple said that more than 25 billion apps have been downloaded from its App Store globally. Users of more than 315 million iPhone, iPad or iPod touch devices have downloaded apps from the App Store since its launch in 2008.

“When we launched the App Store less than four years ago, we never imagined that mobile apps would become the phenomenon they have, or that developers would create such an incredible selection of apps for iOS users,” said Eddy Cue, Apple senior VP of internet software and services.

The 25 billionth download was made by Chunli Fu in China who downloaded the Where’s My Water? Free app and received a US$10,000 iTunes gift card as a result.

The App store now has more than 550,000 apps in 21 categories and is available in 123 countries. During its lifetime, the store has netted developers more than US$4 billion.
