Eastman Kodak added Samsung to the list of mobile device makers it is alleging infringes its patents, shortly before the troubled imaging company filed for bankruptcy protection for its US business.

Kodak made its complaint against Samsung to a US district court, alleging infringements by “certain Samsung tablets.” The patents asserted are all related to the devices’ digital camera functionality.

Last week Kodak filed a suit against Apple and HTC, and the company also has other actions open against Apple and RIM. At this point, it noted that Samsung was a licensee, although it obviously now feels the South Korean company is acting beyond the existing agreement. Other companies having signed licence deals include LG, Motorola and Nokia, all of which are royalty-bearing to Kodak.

Kodak has filed for chapter 11 protection in order to undertake a restructure intended to “bolster liquidity in the US and abroad, monetise non-strategic intellectual property, fairly resolve legacy liabilities, and enable the company to focus on its most valuable business lines.” It has secured a US$950 million credit facility with Citigroup to provide it with working capital.

It was previously reported that Kodak was looking to join the patent gold-rush following the US$4.5 billion sale of Nortel’s intellectual property to a consortium of Apple, EMC, Ericsson, Microsoft, RIM and Sony. It was reported that the value of these assets could be higher than that of Kodak as a whole.
