Amazon has increased the number of apps on its Appstore for Android eight-fold during its first year, from 4,000 at launch to the current 31,000.

Users of the store can download titles for Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet as well as other Android-based devices. They can use the Test Drive feature to try out the apps before buying and once downloaded can use apps across multiple devices.

“Customers have used the Amazon Appstore to test drive and buy millions of apps and games for their Kindle Fire and other Android devices in the first year alone,” said director of Amazon Appstore for Android, Aaron Rubenson.

Rubenson added that Amazon’s investment in personalisation technology helps consumer find the apps they want, while the 1-Click technology makes it extremely easy to purchase them.

The most downloaded paid app during Appstore for Android’s first year was Cut the Rope, while the most popular free app was Angry Birds. Bubble Buster was the most test-driven app.

Senior VP of sales and marketing at developer Glu Mobile Adam Flanders said his company has seen revenue from Appstore for Android grow by more than 1,000 percent since the launch of the Kindle Fire four months ago.

“Amazon provides visibility to a huge customer base. We’ve seen increased engagement with the apps over the last year, especially since the launch of Kindle Fire,” added president of Oceanhouse Media, Michel Kripalani.

Amazon is marking the first birthday of Appstore for Android with a week of deals on some of the most popular games and apps such as Fruit Ninja, Wolfram Alpha and AccuWeather. The first deal is 67 percent off the purchase price of PopCap’s Plants vs Zombies. The company will also give Kindle Fire tablets to eight winners of a sweepstake that will be open until 31 March.
