Shanghai Daily reports that China Mobile’s Ophone platform has failed to generate consumer interest, accounting for just 1 percent of the country’s smartphone market, citing research firm CCID Consulting. The shortage of sales was attributed to the lack of an “innovative” interface and handset makers being unable to customise the platform to add their own enhancements. There have been mixed messages about Ophone recently: during December 2010, it was reported both that China Mobile is looking to create an “innovation alliance” to drive Ophone adoption, and that it is looking to align the platform with the more successful Android, on which it is based.
