Qualcomm has scored a major customer win for its Plaza Mobile Internet widget platform, announcing that Latin American mobile giant America Movil will deploy the platform across all of its 18 subsidiaries in the region. The deployment means the solution will be rolled out to an estimated 190 million mobile subscribers. America Movil said that the move will provide its end users with access to customisable Internet content from mobile devices across their device portfolio. Plaza Mobile Internet enables publishers to develop widgets using open Web standards and tools, and submit their creations to America Movil’s widget catalogue. “Qualcomm is using its expertise building strong publisher and developer ecosystems to ensure that America Movil can deliver targeted content to its subscribers throughout Latin America,” said Noam Raffaelli, managing director of Plaza Mobile Internet.
There was less positive news for Qualcomm in Asia-Pacific, where the chip giant confirmed it has received a draft order from the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) alleging its chipset licensing terms in the country is distorting competition. In a statement, Qualcomm said that it “has never seen any of the evidence upon which the JFTC may be relying and has not… even been aware of many of the allegations,” but said it was preparing a formal response. The Japanese complaint follows a similar move by South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission, which last week fined Qualcomm KWR260 billion (US$208 million) for “unfair” business practices associated with its chipset sales. Qualcomm has said it will appeal the ruling.
