PC-maker Dell has restructured its business divisions in order to more effectively support its fledgling smartphone business, reports Bloomberg. The new ‘Communications’ unit will be led by Dell’s former consumer business chief Ron Garriques, who used to run Motorola’s handset unit. The firm has also combined its consumer and small- and medium-sized (SME) businesses into a single unit to be headed-up by Steve Felice, the current SME chief. The company has two other business groups, one devoted to large enterprises and the other for government agencies. Dell spokesman David Frink said the new communications unit would focus on developing further mobile products. The reorganisation is seen as a move by the firm to diversify into new areas after posting five quarters of declines due to fierce competition in its core PC business.

Dell officially announced its entry into the smartphone space last month, following much speculation. The firm’s first device – the Mini 3 device (pictured) – runs the Android operating system, and is being offered via China Mobile and America Movil’s Claro in Brazil. “Our entry into the smartphone category is a logical extension of Dell’s consumer product evolution over the past two years,” said Garriques in a statement at the time. Dell’s PC rival, Acer, unveiled its first smartphones in February.
