Telenet beefs up MVNO offering

21 OCT 2009

Belgium’s largest cable operator Telenet announced this week it has entered into a seven-year framework deal with Alcatel-Lucent for the construction, operation and maintenance of its new mobile network, reports Reuters. The deal relates to an earlier deal between Telenet and Belgian mobile operator Mobistar, that saw Telenet extend its existing MVNO arrangement with the operator for a further three years. Under the agreement, Telenet will develop its own technical infrastructure, but would collaborate with Mobistar on voice and data radio infrastructure.

In a statement, Telenet said it has selected Alcatel-Lucent as “overall network integrator” to take charge of the integration of its mobile core activities and the network components. Alcatel-Lucent will be responsible for the installation, integration, operation and maintenance of Telenet’s mobile network and the accompanying service infrastructure. Telenet also announced a deal with Comverse to use the vendor’s ‘Comverse ONE’ real-time rating and billing solution. “These two contracts allow us to take the next step in the real expansion of Telenet Mobile,” said Jan Vorstermans, an executive VP at the firm. Telenet offers a so-called ‘quad-play’ of services in Belgium, comprising cable TV, high-speed Internet, fixed-line telephony and mobile.
