Apple yesterday claimed to have sold one million iPads in the tablet computer’s first 28 days of life. “One million iPads in 28 days—that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.” The company added that iPad users have already downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore. Developers have created over 5,000 new apps for the iPad, whilst Apple says that the product will run “almost all” of the more than 200,000 apps on the App Store.

Apple launched a WiFi version of its much-hyped iPad on April 3, and is now selling 3G versions (which use a microSIM in partnership with US operator AT&T). International availability has been pushed back to the end of May. Last month Apple reported its best non-holiday quarter ever, as the Cupertino-based vendor saw profits rise 90 percent for the fiscal 2010 second quarter.
