India’s state run aerospace company NewSpace India outlined plans to launch a broadband communications satellite using Elon Musk’s SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in 2024, as hype continues to grow around the segment in the country.

SpaceX launched six Starlink satellites with the capability to provide mobile coverage directly to standard smartphones, a service the company asserts will improve global connectivity and help eliminate dead zones.  

SpaceX-owned Starlink targeted 2024 for the launch of a commercial satellite-to-phone service, beginning with SMS before adding voice and data services, and IoT connectivity in 2025.

KDDI forged an agreement with SpaceX to provision a satellite-to-phone service in Japan to expand connectivity to areas beyond the reach of its 4G and 5G networks, including remote islands and mountains.

SpaceX agreed a deal with Optus to deliver mobile connectivity using its Starlink satellites starting in late 2024, a deal which includes long-term plans to cover 100 per cent of Australia’s landmass.
