Reuters reports that chipmaker Intel is recruiting for a new software team focused on tablets, “underscoring the top chipmaker's efforts to expand beyond the lackluster PC industry.” The chipmaker's processors are used in 80 percent of the world's PCs, but the company has been slow to adapt its chips for smartphones and tablets (trailing Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics) and is betting heavily on the launch of tablets running Microsoft’s new Windows 8 platform. Last week Intel cut its third-quarter revenue estimate, pointing to declining demand for its chips as customers reduce inventories and businesses buy fewer PCs.
