Access to social media services, including Twitter and WhatsApp, has been blocked in Turkey, internet monitoring group Turkey Blocks reported.

The arrest of pro-Kurdish lawmakers is thought to be the reason behind the “throttling”, which slows down certain websites to the point that they are unusable. It coincided with early morning raids on the parliamentarians.

Facebook, YouTube, Skype and Instagram have also been impacted.

The arrests were part of crackdown by the government on political opponents, following a failed coup in July.

Earlier in the week, the country’s mainly Kurdish southwest experienced a full internet shutdown, reportedly to stop medical supplies reaching patients.
