Russia’s number-three mobile operator MegaFon could become the first in the country to receive a LTE licence, reports Telegeography, citing the Kommersant newspaper. MegaFon is telecoms partner to the Winter Olympic Games due to be held in Sochi in 2014 and plans to invest more than US$200 million into the region’s infrastructure, as part of its US$260 million contract. The operator has requested the LTE frequencies in Sochi as a way to test out the system. A final decision is expected to be taken on 1 June by the State Commission for Radio Frequencies.
