Sony has launched two new smartphones in its Xperia range offering “extra durability and water resistance.”

The Xperia go (pictured) and Xperia acro S both feature scratch resistant mineral glass displays and meet the “industry standard International Protection ratings for protection against dust and water immersion." The former boasts an IP67 rating, which Sony says gives it the highest level of dust and water resistance in a smartphone, allowing it to be immersed in water for 30 minutes at a depth of up to one metre.

According to Sony, a recent study in Japan highlighted water resistance in the top three most important features for smartphone buyers, while more than a third of participants in a Sony Facebook poll stated durability as the most important feature when choosing a smartphone

The Xperia go features a 3.5-inch display, 5MP camera and 1GHz processor running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). The higher-specced (but less durable) Xperia acro S has a 4.3-inch display, 12MP camera and 1.5GHz dual core processor and runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). It has IP55 and IP57 ratings for dust and water resistance. Both devices will launch globally in Q3 this year.
