Light Reading Mobile reported last week that Deutsche Telekom has dropped its support of VoLGA  (Voice over LTE via Generic Access) technology, regarded as a competitor to the more popular VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology. The German operator was the biggest supporter of the circuit-switch-over-packet ‘VoLGA’ technology, which is intended to be used as an interim measure to deliver voice services over LTE networks before the full implementation of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-based voice services. It is now expected that VoLTE will eventually become the norm for providing SMS and voice services over LTE technology, with CSFB (circuit-switch fallback) being the interim solution.
