Apple is holding talks with various record label executives over increasing its mobile music options ahead of the rumoured 3G iPhone launch, reports The New York Times. Apple is reportedly looking to increase its ringtone catalogue, add ‘answer tones’ and offer over-the-air downloads for the first time. Through the talks, which began a few weeks ago, the music labels are reportedly seeking a higher premium for direct 3G downloads. The labels are also seeking higher prices for answer tones (songs that can be heard by callers instead of a standard ringing tone), and often command a higher wholesale price. The newspaper claims Apple is seeking a June launch for its revamped mobile content, coinciding with the expected launch of the next-generation 3G iPhone, widely believed to be scheduled for Apple’s developers’ conference on June 9.

In separate news, Japan’s NTT DoCoMo and South Korea’s KTF are said by Telecoms Korea to be in talks for a joint release of the iPhone. Meanwhile, the iPhone is coming to Spain under exclusive arrangement with Telefonica Movistar, according to various reports today. This is the latest operator to offer the high-profile device, following previous global deals this month from the likes of Orange, SingTel and Vodafone.
