Nokia Siemens Networks says it has been selected as one of four vendors for Verizon Wireless’s trial of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, as well as a trial with NTT DoCoMo via its partner Panasonic. The announcement was one of many to emerge from Nokia’s Capital Markets event in Amsterdam today. The Verizon deal follows last week’s announcement by the U.S. operator that it is to move from CDMA-based technology to GSM-based technology for its next generation network. The deal with DoCoMo is expected to help the Japanese operator deploy LTE technology commercially in the 2011-2012 timeframe.
Meanwhile Nokia announced today it has bolstered its Internet services capabilities with another acquisition, this time of file-sharing startup Avvenu. Previous acquisitions in the Internet services space include a US$8.1 billion acquisition of digital map provider Navteq in October and a September purchase of mobile advertising firm Enpocket.
