Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has showed-off what appears to be the Finnish vendor’s first smartphone running Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS. A YouTube video circulating this week shows Elop revealing a new device codenamed ‘Sea Ray,’ running the latest version of Windows Phone known as ‘Mango.’ Although Elop described the device as “super confidential” and urged those in attendance to “put away their cameras,” some believe he may have deliberately planned to leak the device to detract from Nokia’s current problems. Nokia’s first Windows Phone is not expected to launch until year-end and the handset giant is gambling on the new devices reviving its standing in the smartphone sector.

The prototype showed off by Elop appears virtually identical to Nokia’s new N9 device, which was launched earlier this week and is the vendor’s first phone running its Meego OS. However, Engadget notes that there are some differences, including an extra button to operate the same 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss lens found on the N9 and different placement of an LED light on its back. This “confirms it’s a new device,” claims the website, while “the fact that it’s running Windows Phone 7 Mango seals the deal.”
