Samsung provided advice for developers looking to optimise their apps for the vendor’s Galaxy Note II device, which features a large screen and stylus input.

The South Korean handset giant said that the 5.5-inch HD screen will allow developers to “deliver an extraordinary experience featuring a higher level of detail than previously available”, while also warning that “developing an app for a larger screen size requires a different approach to app design, to ensure the layout of the screen remained optimised”.

It also said that the S Pen input “can be used for accurate drawing, superior handwriting recognition and as a general use, but highly precise, input method”. To support this, it offers an SDK which provides components to use when creating apps using this input method.

The S Pen SDK also includes 20 sample sets of code for developers to integrate into apps, to “quickly understand how to make the most of each available input method”.

The company cited Autodesk’s SketchBook Mobile “professional-grade paint and drawing application” as an “S Pen Success Story”, with the developer stating that it had been able to see the results of using the S Pen SDK “literally within hours”.

Autodesk said that the pressure sensitive input “provides an authentic drawing experience”.

Samsung said that apps optimised for the Galaxy Note II can be distributed through Samsung Apps, its store which is available to users in more than 120 countries.
