Facebook announced its Facebook for Every Phone app, intended to enable access to the service from “over 2,500 different phones.” In order to drive penetration of the app, the social networking giant has partnered with “many” operators worldwide to offer free data access for the app for 90 days. It said it is “optimised to use less data than other Java apps or mobile sites,” making it more affordable when the trial period ends.

Earlier this year, Facebook agreed a deal to acquire Snaptu, the company behind its mass-market apps for feature phones. In addition to providing the handset app, Snaptu also provides back-end technology to manage the delivery of content to handsets.

Facebook for Every Phone is being distributed through a number of stores, including Appia, GetJar and Mobile Weaver.
