Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim has moved to expand his Brazilian telecoms empire, offering US$2.6 billion to take full control of Net Servicos, a leading cable-TV provider. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Slim’s Brazilian long-distance telecoms firm Embratel has announced a public tender to buy all preferred shares in Net Servicos in a deal that could amount to BRL4.58 billion (US$2.6 billion). Slim already has a 49 percent shareholding in the firm. He also controls Brazilian mobile operator, Claro.
