John Legere, outspoken boss of ‘uncarrier’ T-Mobile USA, used a media event in New York this week to refute any claims that the company’s recent success is entirely due to Apple’s smartphone.

“iPhones. We sold a lot. iPhones were 29 per cent of our smartphone sales,” Legere noted, before adding that this figure “should scare the crap out of you if you think iPhones transitioned our company”.

Indeed, Legere was quick to point out that, “since April, iPhones were never even 50 per cent of our base sales” and “there’s more to this story than just iPhones”. In April this year T-Mobile became the last of the big four US operators to launch the iPhone.

T-Mobile USA’s CEO said the operator is attracting customers from rival operators such as AT&T “in droves”, fuelled by a wide portfolio of devices (particularly Android smartphones) and its new no-contract strategy. Legere also this week unveiled its new JUMP! initiative, enabling customers to upgrade their smartphones twice a year for an additional cost of $10/month.

Other T-Mobile execs also had their say at the New York event. CTO Neville Ray highlighted the company’s 4G device offering: “It’s not just the iPhone and the GS4, we’ve got everything!” And CMO Mike Sievert unveiled a new family-plan program, enabling families to get four phone lines with unlimited talk, text and Web and up to 500MB of high-speed data for $100 per month – with no credit check or annual service contract required.

The management’s claims will be tested further next month when parent company Deutsche Telekom releases its second-quarter earnings report (8 August).
