America Movil has been busy again internationally with the consolidation of its existing shareholdings in Telekom Austria, while stepping up its US involvement by acquiring domestic MVNO Start Wireless Group.

The Mexican company’s move in Austria means it will now have a 26.8 per cent stake in the incumbent, having purchased a 3.14 per cent stake from sellers linked to the Carlos Slim family.

The new stake is sufficient to veto critical decisions at Telekom Austria while falling short of the 30 per cent level where a takeover offer is mandatory.

Carso Telecom, which is America Movil’s European holding company, has acquired a 3.14 per cent stake from Inmobiliaria Carso and Control Empresarial de Capitales.

Meanwhile, the Mexican giant has also announced that its subsidiary Tracfone Wireless has acquired MVNO Start Wireless Group in the US for an undisclosed sum.

The announcement, said Tracfone, itself a leading MVNO, sees it acquiring “substantially all of the assets” of Start Wireless, more commonly known as Page Plus, which has 1.4 million non-contract users on the Verizon Wireless network.
