Dell’s Chief Executive said yesterday that his company is “more focused on the computer business” in response to speculation that Dell could be a potential acquirer of Motorola’s mobile phone business. “We really don’t comment on rumours and speculation,” Michael Dell told Reuters in an interview. “We are more focused on the computer business.”

In February last year Dell hired Ron Garriques, Executive VP of Motorola’s handset division, to run its entire consumer business. Analysts regarded the move as an indicator the firm was mulling entry into the smartphone market. Last week speculation linked Dell and Google to a potential mobile phone partnership that could be announced as early as next week at the GSMA Mobile World Congress. Neither company has confirmed the speculation.
