Google said that the growth of multiple connected device ownership and mobility creates a “tremendous opportunity” for the company, as it reported strong figures for the second quarter of 2013.

In its conference call, Larry Page (pictured), CEO of the company, said: “With hindsight, Android and Chrome were no brainers. At the time, they were big bets. The momentum across these platforms is tremendous.”

“We’ve now activated more than 900 million Android devices worldwide and we’re lining up over 1.5 million devices every day. That’s pretty amazing considering the first Android phone launched less than five years ago,” he continued.

On a group level, the company reported a net profit of $3.23 billion, up 15.9 per cent year-on-year, on revenue of $14.11 billion, up 19.5 per cent.

For the Motorola Mobility unit, revenue was $998 million, up 18.4 per cent from $843 million. This business saw a GAAP operating loss of $342 million in the quarter, compared with $199 million in the year-ago quarter.

Page also made a brief reference to the anticipated Moto X smartphone, set to be launched by the vendor in the near future.

“I know you’re all eagerly anticipating what Motorola is launching soon. Having been a tester for a while, I’m really excited,” he said.
