ZTE is making its Open smartphone, powered by the fledgling Firefox OS platform, available for sale via eBay in the UK and US, one month after its introduction by Telefonica in Spain, Venezuela and Colombia.

The device will cost £59.99/$79.99 unlocked, with an “exclusive” Orange version of the smartphone available.

In a statement, ZTE said that availability of the device through eBay “means that more consumers worldwide are now able, for the first time, to buy an affordable smartphone based entirely on open web standards”.

Dai Wenhing, VP for the device maker, said: “The ZTE Open offers customers a smartphone experience at an incredible price point, making it ideal for cost conscious consumers or those looking to upgrade to a smartphone for the first time.”
