Deutsche Telekom (DT) has announced plans to sell the Alcatel One Touch Fire in Europe, one of the first devices to support the new mobile operating system from Mozilla.

The group’s T-Mobile Poland subsidiary will be first out of the Firefox OS traps with online sales starting tomorrow (12 July). The Alcatel One Touch Fire will become available in T-Mobile Poland’s retail stores from 15 July.

Market launches in further European countries are to follow in autumn. In Germany, the phone will be marketed via DT’s second brand, congstar. The company’s subsidiaries in Hungary (Magyar Telekom) and Greece (Cosmote) will also begin sales this autumn.

“Our cooperation with Mozilla once again demonstrates how we at Deutsche Telekom offer our customers innovative products and services ahead of anyone else,” said Claudia Nemat, Board member for Europe and Technology at Deutsche Telekom. “With Firefox OS we are expanding our existing portfolio with a new operating system that is open, developer-friendly and reasonably priced.”

Through Alcatel One Touch Fire, Deutsche Telekom says it is bringing an “affordable” smartphone to the market. In Poland, the Alcatel One Touch Fire will be available starting at PLN1 (€0.23), along with an “attractive” tariff offer.

Deutsche Telekom’s announcement comes only days after Telefonica Movistar in Spain started selling the first commercial device supporting Firefox OS – the ZTE Open – for €69.

The rollout of Firefox OS devices follows the announcement at Mobile World Congress in February that more than 20 operators and handset vendors would support the new platform. The HTML5-based OS is designed to bring a smartphone experience at a low price point, with a particular focus on emerging markets.
