It was reported that Apple had taken action to remove a number of “fake” apps from its App Store, as Android Market users also complained about the listing of similar products.

According to The Guardian, a number of iOS developers had been arguing that Apple should do more to remove apps which have titles and graphics similar to popular products, created to lure unsuspecting buyers. While the company has an app approvals process, the report said that “it has tended to leave IP [intellectual property] infringement to be policed by developers.”

Similarly, Security News Daily said that “a new batch of fake and dangerous apps” had reached Android Market, similarly using brands similar to established products. It reported that a number of apps requested users to input personal information before they could be used.

While it was announced that Google has recently introduced technology to monitor and scan apps for malware, these products would not be affected because they do “not contain malware, nor did they do anything to damage a user's phone or bypass permissions."
