Samsung has announced an updated version of Galaxy Grand, which sports a much sharper screen resolution than its predecessor from last year.

While the 2012 Samsung Galaxy Grand has a 5-inch display with 480×800 pixels (187 ppi), the Galaxy Grand 2 is fitted with a 5.25-inch display carrying 720×1280 pixels (280 ppi).

Even so, the new model has generally not excited reviewers.

Engadget says that while the Grand 2 might share the screen-size with the Galaxy Note family, it describes the smartphone as “more middleweight than flagship”.

Features of Grand 2 include 8GB of base storage – with microSD expansion up to 64GB – and a quad-core 1.2GHz processor. The Android OS is 4.3 Jelly Bean.

One drawback, perhaps, is the absence of a stylus. Engadget also argues that the rear-facing 8-megapixel camera might not stand up to comparisons against the higher pixel-count varieties.

Neither does the new model support LTE.
