The Greek regulators may not automatically renew the 2G licences of operators Vodafone and Wind when they expire in 2012, according to reports, with the operators facing an auction process to keep hold of their existing spectrum. It was also suggested that there will be no preferential treatment for the existing players, which means that Wind or Vodafone could be outbid by a new entrant – the former is clearly the weaker of the two. The move is believed to reflect the cash-strapped Greek government’s desire to generate as much revenue as possible from its spectrum assets.
