A bigger percentage of US iPhone users played games in December 2012 than their Android counterparts, with iPhone users also taking part in more games sessions, according to figures from Arbitron Mobile.

According to the company, 85.7 per cent of iPhone users in its US panel played games, compared with 76 per cent of Android device owners. iPhone users took part in an average of 151.5 sessions per month, compared with 94.6 sessions for Android users.

While some device functions were used by more respondents – such as social networking, messaging, browsing and calls – users spent most time playing games.

The most popular title for both devices was Words With Friends, although it has a “larger proportion of fans” among iPhone users.

Scramble With Friends also scored highly for both platforms, although there are some differences: Temple Run and Draw Something score well on iPhone but not Android, while Angry Birds Star Wars and Fruit Ninja are in the top five for Android but not the iPhone.

The Arbitron Mobile panel in the US consists of around 12,000 people age 18 or older, who voluntarily install a software meter onto their devices.
