Japanese social gaming company Gree is to acquire mobile games company Funzio, in a deal worth around US$210 million. The acquirer said that the deal “marks the latest step in Gree’s goal of developing the Gree platform.”

Funzio creates free-to-play role playing games for iOS and Android, and its titles “have achieved broad success through social networking platforms including Facebook and Google+, exceeding 20 million downloads worldwide.”

Gree said that the buy will enable it to “capitalise on the success of Funzio’s existing titles and develop new genres of global games with Funzio’s talented team.”

According to TechCrunch, last month Funzio was looking to raise US$50 million in funding, which would have valued it at around US$350 million.

The deal is expected to be completed this month.
