Amazon said that following the launch of its Kindle Fire HD tablets, it is introducing a feature called “Amazon Device Targeting”, enabling developers to target specific devices with their apps.

The company said that while it is “easy” to support optional APIs and device capabilities within a single installation file, developers may prefer to generate different versions of an app targeting specific terminals.

Amazon is supporting separate files for Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD (7-inch), Kindle Fire HD (8.9-inch) and general (non-Amazon) Android devices.

In a blog post, the company highlighted benefits including: support for device-specific customisation based on screen size and density, OpenGL compression format and API version; reduced customer confusion by only presenting the most relevant versions of an app; and consolidated reviews, page views and downloads, to improve app visibility.
