The head of Telekom Austria said America Movil is not expected to make any “unfriendly moves” towards the company, following the Latin American giant’s failed attempt to acquire Netherlands-based affiliate KPN.

According to Reuters, Hannes Ametsreiter, chief executive of the Austrian player, said: “The Mexicans have shown themselves to be good partners. One thing I think they won’t do is act in a hostile way.”

While America Movil followed up on buying a stake in KPN by looking to acquire control of the company, this came after KPN announced a deal to sell its German business (E-Plus) to Telefonica – a deal which at least initially America Movil was unconvinced by.

But with this deal hitting the skids last week, Telekom Austria, the other European business in which America Movil is a shareholder, would be the most obvious route for the Americas-focused group to increase its presence in the market.

Separately, Reuters said that Telekom Austria is unlikely to look to a capital increase to fund its acquisition of spectrum suitable for LTE networks, in line with an auction that is currently in progress.

Apparently, bids were approaching €2 billion at the end of last week, but the prices bid by individual operators remains a closely-guarded secret.

The participants, under threat of exclusion if there is any hint of collusion, have even been forbidden from confirming they are participating, the report said.
