Motorola said the ability to customise its Moto X smartphone will be made available across “all major US carriers including Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T”, ahead of the Christmas holiday sales period.

The ability to customise the device was one of the major selling points of the device, which was announced in August 2013.

In a blog post, the Google-owned vendor also said that the device will be available at a promotional price of $99.99 with a two-year contract, down from $199.

And an update to Android 4.4 (KitKat) is also “coming soon”.

According to the Wall Street Journal, research firm Strategy Analytics said that Motorola has shifted just 500,000 of the devices to date, whereas Samsung’s Galaxy S4 shifted 10 million units in the first month of its release.

With its limited geographic release (it is US-focused) and support from US operators not especially noticable, it is perhaps unsurprising that it has failed to generate more traction.
