India is set for another round of spectrum sales beginning on 11 March, after the government moved to cut the reserve price of 800 MHz licences suitable for CDMA operators, reports The Economic Times.

Kapil Sibal, the country’s Telecoms Minister, confirmed the auctions will take place in March, with bidding for the 800 MHz band spectrum taking place across all the country’s circles.

India has struggled to attract interest from bidders for the CDMA spectrum.

In response, it has been proposed that the reserve price is cut by 30 per cent to 50 per cent, said the report. The cabinet will take a final decision on the issue soon.

The first round of spectrum auction, which followed a court case in February last year to cancel existing licences, took place in November, with Telenor emerging as the big spender.

But the government failed to auction CDMA spectrum, which had a reserve price that was 1.3 times higher than that for GSM spectrum in the 1800 MHz band.
