Sony Mobile updated its flagship range with the launch of Z3+, stopping short of badging it as a new range-topper.
With several recent flagship devices – notably HTC’s One M9 – being criticised for offering little over the smartphones that preceeded them, the Z3+ branding reflects the fact that it offers an incremental upgrade over the earlier device.
Engadget said that the device is the same as the Z4 announced by Sony for the Japanese market earlier this year.
Xperia Z3+ features the same size display (5.2-inches) as its predecessor, and is roughly the same size (146x72mm). It is slightly slimmer, though, at 6.9mm (compared with 7.3mm), and weighs less (144 grams, compared with 152 grams).
It also picks up a new 5MP front camera, replacing the 2.2MP sensor in the earlier device, which it says “means you can now get better selfies in any light”.
And under the hood, it now has an octacore Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor (2.0GHz quadcore plus 1.5GHz quadcore), in place of a Snapdragon 801 (2.5GHz quadcore).
The device will launch globally from June 2015 in both single SIM and dual SIM variants. It will be available in four colours – black, white, copper and aqua green.
When Sony unveiled Z3 at IFA2014 last year, it was accompanied by a “compact” sibling which, despite its smaller form factor, shared many specifications with the larger device – unlike other vendors’ smaller devices, which are often quite different.
The company has made no reference to availability of a Z3+ Compact, however.
