Samsung announced a new addition to its processor family designed for “next-generation mid-range smartphones and other mobile devices”.

The company has been making its own mobile processors for some time, but the work has focused around high-tier devices.

The new product, Exynos 7 Octa 7870, will use Samsung’s 14 nanometer FinFET process technology, with the company stating that this is the first time an application processor using this is available targeting the mass market.

It said this will enable it to “give mobile manufacturers an ideal mobile SoC option for mid-range smartphones with leading-edge performance and power efficiency, and area scaling benefits”.

While Samsung’s processor efforts have obviously centred on its own device portfolio, it has supplied other vendors, notably Meizu.

Exynos 7 Octa 7870 is a 1.6GHz octacore processor with LTE modem supporting download speeds of 300Mb/s.

It will enter mass production in the first quarter of 2016.
