Samsung is reportedly set to extend its Galaxy Note line with the launch of an 8-inch tablet variant, joining its existing “phablet” and tablet devices in this line.

While the Galaxy S is the South Korean vendor’s flagship smartphone line, the 5.5-inch screen Galaxy Note II has also seen some success – providing it with two successful high-tier smartphone lines.

According to reports originating from iNews24, the device, which is set to debut at the GSMA Mobile World Congress next month, is believed to be closer in spec to its larger, 10.1-inch tablet sibling than the phablet.

It is said to share the screen resolution with the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and include a 1.6GHz quad-core processor.

A launch would fit with Samsung’s strategy of offering variants of its products at different sizes and with varying feature sets, which is notably in contrast with Apple’s more limited product portfolio.

While the pen-led input of the Note does not lend itself easily to smaller form devices, the company is now offering the 5.5-inch phablet and 10.1-inch tablet, with the rumoured 8-inch tablet fitting in between.

In addition to the 7-inch and 10-inch Galaxy Tab 2 devices (and the 10-inch Nexus 10 created for Google), Samsung has also offered tablets with 8.9-inch and 7.7 inch screens.
