Ambitious Taiwanese semiconductor vendor MediaTek announced commercial availability of its first LTE system-on-chip in Europe, which has found its home in Vodafone’s Smart 4 Power.

MediaTek, which supplies products to many fast-growing device makers originating from Asia, has previously said it is targeting a “super mid-market” of high performance, but lower cost, devices.

Smart 4 certainly appears to fit into this category: the Android 4.4 smartphone can stream videos in HD, play enhanced audio and make HD voice calls.

With a 5-inch screen, 5 megapixel rear camera, and 1.3GHz quad-core processor, it has a starting price of €169, Vodafone said.

It appears to be manufactured by fast-growing Chinese vendor Coolpad.

“This shows our commitment to enabling consumers to have more choice and accessibility when it comes to high-performing LTE technology,” said Siegmund Redl, VP and GM of corporate marketing at MediaTek Europe.
