Microsoft has revamped its Facebook app for Windows Phone with added support for smartphones running 256MB of RAM.

The move means users of lower-end Windows Phone devices — likely to be in developing markets — will be able to access the social network on their mobile devices.

The updated beta version of the app works on the different versions of Windows Phone 7 and newer Windows Phone 8, and includes bug fixes and performance improvements, according to a tweet from Joe Belfiore, head of Windows Phone.

All About Windows Phone reported in May that 1.6 per cent of apps in Windows Phone Marketplace were incompatible with 256MB devices. These included significant apps such as Facebook.

With Microsoft buying Nokia’s Devices & Services unit for €5.4 billion, the company will want to address the needs of consumers in developing markets, where Nokia still generates a significant proportion of its revenue.
