LG Electronics is set to introduce a new logo for its Optimus smartphone range, in a move “reflecting the company’s reinforced brand leadership.”

The company said the new design is intended to “accentuate the metallic edges and slim shape of the 2012 smartphone lineup unveiled at this year’s Mobile World Congress.” The internet has been awash with speculation as to what the company has up its sleeve for the event, with possible options including a device with quad-core processor, and another unit in its 3D line.

LG said its new Optimus logo “embodies modern and seamless simplicity, which is core for LG’s design philosophy for mobile devices.”

While the South Korean company was late to the smartphone party, the company has begun to capitalise on growth in the market through its Optimus line, which includes a device with LTE connectivity. However, the one-time number three handset vendor saw this spot taken by Apple in the fourth quarter of 2011, with the US vendor benefitting from the introduction of its iPhone 4S.
