Worldwide tablet sales are forecast to total 118.9 million units in 2012, a 98 percent increase from 2011 sales of 60 million units, according to new figures from Gartner. Apple's iOS (as used on the iPad) is expected to remain the dominant media tablet OS, projected to account for 61.4 percent of worldwide tablet sales to end users in 2012. Android tablets are forecast to account for 31.9 percent of sales this year, with Microsoft’s first Windows 8-powered devices accounting for 4.1 percent.
