Proposed US wholesale LTE operator LightSquared has requested the Federal Communications Commission to develop receiver reliability standards for unlicensed GPS devices, to ensure their performance takes into account licensed users on nearby spectrum bands. Tests have shown that the company’s LTE network, which operates close to GPS spectrum, causes interference to GPS devices. LightSquared claims the interference issue is due to "an industry decision to design and sell poorly filtered devices that purposefully depend on spectrum licensed to LightSquared for accuracy." Although LightSquared is focused on GPS receivers in the 1559-1610Mhz band, the company said a broader standard would create a level playing field across all US spectrum.
