Jumio, a company which said it “turned webcams into card and ID readers,” released a software development kit which it said enables developers to add credit card scanning capabilities to mobile apps.

Customers will be able to input credit card information by scanning their card using a device camera, rather than needing to use the keypad.

The company’s Netswipe Mobile Software Development Kit is available for iOS, and a version for Android will follow soon.

To support the release, Jumio said that it has decided to waive US$5 million worth of scanning fees, “to support young start-ups and the developer community.” It will absorb the cost of the first 1,000 scans each month for apps using the SDK.

According to Daniel Mattes, founder and CEO of the company: “Even though we are not a typical start-up anymore we very much carry the spirit and want to support up and coming enterprises."
