Fly Labs, maker of video editing apps, has been acquired by Google and will be joining the Google Photos team.

The move indicates that Google wants to improve video features on its Google Photos app, which hit 100 million monthly active users in October.

In the last 18 months, Fly Labs said its video editing apps like Clips and Fly have been downloaded more than 3 million times globally with more than 20 million videos created.

“It’s a perfect match for what we built at Fly Labs, and we’re looking forward to folding our technology into Google Photos. We’ll be pouring the same passion into Google Photos that we poured into Clips, Fly, Tempo and Crop on the Fly,” it said on its website.

“Our mission at Fly Labs has always been simple: to help people make the most of their photos and videos,” it added.

Fly Labs apps are now available for free with no in-app purchases, and will stay on the App Store for another three months, although no updates will be made.

No-cost “unlimited, high quality” storage for photos is one of the core features of Google Photos, which is is likely to be attractive to many people who struggle with limited space on their phones.
