UK operator EE is making its NFC-based mobile payments service available to more of its LTE subscribers. It has added four more smartphones with which users can make purchases in shops and cafes around the UK.

The NFC-based service called Cash on Tap, launched in partnership with MasterCard in July, is now accessible by users of the following Android handsets: Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy Note 2 and 3, as well as the Sony Xperia Z1.

The service was previously supported by three Android 4G handsets: Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia SP and Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE.

At launch of Cash on Tap, the operator said it would expand the range of available handsets in the coming months.

The app for the service is available free in Google Play store. EE has not said how many downloads it has had.

New customers receive £5 free when they activate their account for the first time.

However, the sum must be used within 60 days of activation or the user will lose it.

When they first load their account with more than £20, EE will credit users’ accounts with another £5 free. If the user closes their account, then the operator will not refund any “free” cash which is outstanding.

Cash on Tap is designed for small transactions (under £20) in high street locations. The service is accepted in over 230,000 outlets nationwide, including McDonald’s, Caffe Nero, Pret A Manger and Greggs.
