Motorola Mobility resurrected its iconic RAZR brand for its latest Android smartphone, maintaining its predecessors’ slimline form factor by measuring just 7.1 millimetres in depth.

The device is powered by Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread), rather than the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) platform announced yesterday by Google, and used by Samsung in the Galaxy Nexus.

The company is planning two versions of the new RAZR: a quadband WCDMA version for GSM markets, and a dual-mode LTE/CDMA version which will initially be available from Verizon Wireless (as the DROID RAZR).

The new smartphone has a 4.3-inch screen, 1.2GHz dual core processor, and an 8MP main camera.

At the launch event yesterday, Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola Mobility, highlighted a number of software enhancements made to the device. It comes preloaded with the MotoCast app, which enables users to stream content from a home PC; and Smart Actions, which automates tasks such as profile changes, and can be used to prolong battery life – for example by disabling GPS and Bluetooth when at home, triggered by connection to a defined WiFi access point.

The company also trumpeted RAZR’s enterprise capabilities, stating that it features “government grade encryption” to protect email, calendar and contact details.

Availability will be detailed closer to release. So far, Canadian operator Rogers Communications is set to exclusively offer the device in the country “in time for the holidays,” while Verizon Wireless will offer its version from November from US$299.99 with a two-year contract. Singapore operators SingTel, StarHub and M1 will launch the device in "early November." Other carriers in North America, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Middle East and Africa will also offer the smartphone from next month.

At the same event, Motorola also announced its Motoactiv wearable fitness device, which combines a performance monitor with MP3 player, supported by an online portal to track workouts and compare performance with friends.

The company said it can be combined with iTS SF500 wired and SF700 wireless headphones, which include a built-in heart-rate monitor.
