Huawei announced another Windows Phone-powered device, Ascend W2, which the company is targeting at “value-savvy” consumers.

The smartphone will be available in a “range of vibrant finishes including black, blue, yellow and red,” indicating that the company is looking to echo Nokia’s strategy of offering colourful, low-end WP devices.

Indeed, it will be Nokia’s range that provides the obvious competition for Huawei, specifically the (currently) Finnish company’s Lumia 520 device, which has been identified as a strong performer.

Ascend W2 has a 1.4GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor and a 4.3-inch WVGA screen with “TFT Magic Touch” technology “for incredible responsiveness even when wearing gloves”.

According to recent figures from Strategy Analytics, Huawei secured the global number three smartphone vendor spot in the third quarter of 2013, although Europe and the US were identified as weak points in its armory.

The Ascend W2 will become available in Russia and the Netherlands this month, with other markets to follow.

A TD version of the device was launched in China in August, with the WCDMA version launched in its home market last month.

Huawei announced its first Windows Phone device, Ascend W1, earlier this year. It has also offered an Africa-targeted version to support Microsoft’s 4Afrika Initiative.
