Yahoo acquired Hitpost, a developer of sport-focused apps, as it continues to bolster its iOS and Android app portfolio.

Hitpost’s seven staff will join the Yahoo Sports division in California, and will work to integrate the company’s technology with Yahoo’s products. Hitpost titles Sports Bet, Fantasy Football Polls and Hitpost.com will no longer operate.

In a statement on its website, Hitpost said joining Yahoo is “an exciting strategic opportunity to deliver our value at a larger scale”. According to TechCrunch, the company has attracted investment totalling $2 million.

In July, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer (pictured) said the company was making good progress with its mobile apps, with usage of recently-launched titles increasing strongly.

Back in October 2012, Mayer emphasised the need for Yahoo to have a more cohesive mobile strategy compared to the “previously fragmented and unfocused products”.

Between October and July the company increased the size of its mobile team six-fold through recruitment and acquisitions, while monthly mobile users passed 340 million in June.
