New analysis by Flurry reveals that the sale of virtual goods within mobile apps is already generating more revenue than display advertising on Apple’s iOS platform. This study was conducted using data collected from a sample of leading iOS social networking and social gaming applications, with a combined reach of 2.2 million daily active users. It found that during 2010, revenue has increasingly shifted from advertising to virtual goods sales, and that virtual goods now account for 80 percent of apps revenue (ARPU).
